About Alaska Tales Whale Watching

Alaska Tales offers daily whale watching tours in Juneau Alaska during the summer tourist season (May-Oct). We operate multiple 49 passenger catamarans as well as single 16 passenger smaller vessel for a more private and intimate experience. With a staff of more than 30, the team is comprised of a variety of rolls, including boat captains, deckhands, naturalists, bus drivers, doc attendants, and sales staff.

    CDL Driver

    $25.00 - $30.00 / hour + tips
    Juneau

    Alaska Tales is looking for professional drivers who possess a positive attitude and enjoy working with all types of people in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

    Job Requirements

    • Clean driving record
    • Class A or B CDL with Passenger endorsement
    • 2+ years experience in driving passenger buses


    Job Duties and Responsibilities

    • Perform daily pre-check on assigned bus
    • Drive safely along designated routes
    • Obey traffic laws, safety procedures, and transit regulations
    • Pick up and drop off passengers at designated locations
    • Follow a specific timetable while on duty
    • Assist with passenger loading
    • Communicate with employers regarding delays or any passenger issues


    Other job duties include delivering a narrative to passengers about Juneau and the local area, collecting passenger tickets while boarding at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, and getting passengers to and from the boat harbor in a timely manner.  

    The ideal candidate should be outgoing, hardworking, and excellent at communicating. Some customer service experience would be helpful for this position. You will greet and load tour guests on the cruise ship dock in a friendly and professional manner.  Attention to detail, excellent customer service, conflict resolution and communication skills are required for this position.

    Whale Watch Captain

    $6,500.00 - $8,500.00 / month + tips
    Juneau

    Alaska Tales Whale Watching is seeking a full time Whale Watching Captain for the upcoming summer season in Juneau, Alaska.

    Captains are responsible for the safe operation of daily whale watching tours, including basic vessel maintenance, accurate completion of daily logs, Whale Sense viewing compliance and training, safety speeches, basic crew training overseeing Deckhand/ Naturalist duties and setting a good example for wildlife viewing ethics and methods on the water. Season: Mid-April to October. Schedule varies, 5-6 days a week minimum.

    Job Requirements:

    • 50 ton USCG Masters License 
    • Strong outboard boat handling skills preferred
    • Detail oriented, safety-oriented work ethic
    • Must be team oriented and enjoy working with others
    • Must exhibit excellent time management skills
    • Capable of working long hours/flexible hours
    • Capable of lifting 50 pounds
    • Current first aid and CPR certification
    • Subject to pre-employment and/or random drug testing
    • Cell phone with text/voice mail
    • Reliable transportation


    Job Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Operate company vessels and conduct regular daily whale watching tours
    • Perform ethical and responsible wildlife viewing practices
    • Oversee upkeep and maintenance of vessels
    • Oversee Deckhand/Naturalist duties
    • Maintain a high standard of quality for our tours
    • Maintain positive relationships with staff
    • Adhere to company standards
    • Maintain a daily ship's log
    • Provide oversight on all safety issues


    Other Considerations:

    • Well versed on local & federal laws regarding wildlife viewing.
    • Must be familiar and compliant with all regulations included in the Marine Mammal Protection Act, NOAA Fisheries guidelines, and Whale Sense wildlife viewing procedures. 
    • Background in ecotourism preferred, specifically viewing cetaceans. 

    Naturalist

    $50.00 - $70.00 / trip + tips
    Juneau

    Alaska Tales Whale Watching is seeking full time Naturalists for the upcoming summer season in Juneau, Alaska. 

    As a naturalists, you are responsible for the preparation, presentation and education of the local wildlife to our guests, including vessel safety procedures, migratory patterns, feeding habits, behavioral patterns and more. Season runs May 1st through Oct 1st. Schedule varies, 5-6 days a week minimum.

    Job Requirements:

    • Experience working on boats
    • Whale watching or other ecotourism experience preferred
    • Outgoing, positive attitude
    • Subject to pre-employment and/or random drug testing
    • Cell phone with text/voice mail
    • Reliable transportation


    Job Skills:

    • Excellent customer service
    • Detail oriented, safety-oriented work ethic

    Tour Representative

    $18.00 - $22.00 / hour
    Juneau

    Alaska Tales Whale Watching is seeking full time Tour Attendents for the upcoming summer season in Juneau, Alaska.

    We are looking for candidates who possess strong communication skills, ability to multitask, and enjoy working in a fast paced, team oriented dynamic work environment.

    Job Requirements:

    • 18+ years or older
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Reliable transportation


    Job Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Meet guests disembarking cruise ships.
    • Collect vouchers and ensure each guest is appropriately checked in.
    • Provide guests with an overview of the tour and answer any questions they may have.
    • Assist guests to appropriate transportation for departure.
    • Communicate in person and via phone with the tour coordinating team.
    • General administrative/ bookkeeping work.
    • Additional responsibilities as needed including customer service phone calls, emails, reservations.
