    Office Manager

    $3,000.00 - $4,500.00 / season

    Position Description: The Agassiz Village Office Manager is responsible for delivering high quality customer service to ensure that each child is registered properly, through computer data input, verbal communication, and handling of financial transactions. The Office Manager is an integral member of our team and contributes to the success of each camper’s summer experience. You interact with both camp staff and camper families on a regular basis, making many positive contributions to the lives of our campers and staff. The Office Manager is often the first point of contact for campers and families and is an indispensable connection with our camper families, as an office manager, account manager and office assistant and should provide a positive customer experience for staff, parents, and campers.

    DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Serve as camp receptionist with regular daily office hours from 9am to 6pm and provide necessary information to camp families and respond via email and phone to camper inquiries.
    • Call/email camper families about missing forms (i.e., parent handbooks, USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) form, health history forms), payments, and transportation updates.
    • Handle billing, payment plans, refunds, and collections.
    • Help to coordinate email blasts to update families about pick-up and drop-off, camp activities, packing list, etc. 
    • Order supplies for the Camp Store and organize the store items replenishing when necessary.
    • Receive and sort all mail and open camper boxes to ensure package is appropriate for campers to receive.
    • Assist the Program Director and Camp Director with camper pick-up and drop-off by preparing camper lists and other materials as well as being on duty at location assigned.
    • Provide clerical support for the Camp Director, Program Director and Leadership team.
    • Scan, file and organize documents.
    • General office upkeep: supply ordering, organization, and upkeep of facilities.
    • Accept direction, feedback from supervisors, and follow through appropriately.
    • Act as a responsible member of the camp community both in and outside of the camp environment during periods of employment.
    • Participate in staff and other meetings, such as in-service training and staff development and orientation activities.
    • Supporting the Directors with accounting tasks including managing receipts and invoices

    Daytime Activities Manager

    Poland, ME

    POSITION SUMMARY:  The Agassiz Village Daytime Activities Manager is responsible for creating and overseeing all daytime programming (archery, waterfront, performing arts, yoga, art, nature, sports, etc.). They are also responsible for creating and implementing the activity curriculum, guidelines and procedures that align with the program goals and outcomes Agassiz wants to achieve. They are also accountable for the daily needs of the program.  This includes maintenance, facilitating, leading and/or supervising the specific program areas and providing constant positive feedback and guiding the campers and staff to strive for excellence in everything they do. The Daytime Activities Manager works closely with the Evening and Weekend Activities Manager to ensure all campers are having fun, collaborating, exploring and thriving. Together you are responsible for 5-8 staff members (activity instructors) and ensuring they are running adequate programming that is consistent with the outcomes we want children to achieve.

    Responsibilities and Key Functions:

    1. Prepare for daytime activities in advance by creating lesson plans, determining materials needed, ensuring supplies have been ordered in advance of events, and making sure staff are trained to carry out the event and understand their role in the success of the event.
    2. Lead safe, age appropriate, and enriching activities.
    3. Ensure all equipment, materials, and supplies are returned to storage immediately after the event and that staff and campers have cleaned the space before retiring for the night. 
    4. Deliver progressive and challenging programming that allows children to grow and make strides toward achieving goals.
    5. Take every opportunity to teach campers social and emotional skills such as relationship building, perseverance, self-reflection, goal setting and more as you encourage each camper to recognize what they are capable of through mentorship and daily conversations with youth.
    6. Evaluate the success of each evening and weekend program after each session and make the necessary changes for improvement.
    7. Act as the MC/host for evening events and get the crowd excited about the event and ensure fun and joy in each activity. 
    8. Conduct daily check of program area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair in compliance with American Camp Association (ACA) standards.
    9. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment.
    10. All other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Youth Development and Experience.
    11. Follow the schedule, beginning and ending each activity on time.
    12. Communicate to the Director of Youth Development and Experience any changes in programming that might affect the daily schedule.
    13. Attending all mealtimes is mandatory.
    14. Make appropriate announcements about evening and weekend activities at meals. 
    15. Ensure youth and counselors are prepared to participate in big camp events like the talent show. Check in on staff to be sure they are working ahead to ensure the success of these events. 
    16. Rotate with other staff, monitoring village after lights out - “on duty.”
    17. Perform an end of the season program evaluation and make recommendations for equipment, supplies, and program for the following season.
    18. Accept direction, feedback from supervisors, and follow through appropriately.
    19. Act as a responsible member of the camp community both in and outside of the camp environment during periods of employment.
    20. Participate in staff and other meetings, such as in-service training and staff development and orientation activities.
    21. Perform all other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff. ­
    • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. ­
    • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. ­
    • Ability to successfully create and run large scale events for groups of 12 – 200.
    • Ability to positively communicate with staff and youth to ensure everyone is informed and prepared to participate and execute events. 
    • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
    • Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

    Waterfront

    Waterfront Director

    $4,000.00 / season
    Poland, ME

    POSITION SUMMARY:  The Agassiz Village Waterfront Director is responsible for supervising a team of 6-7 lifeguards, and 150 campers ages 8-17 while on the waterfront, including all water activities, equipment, and facilities. The Waterfront Director ensures that the Camp’s waterfront program and protocols are followed in compliance with the regulations for Department of Health and American Camp Association standards.  They will provide a safe and nurturing environment for all and will be actively involved and have a positive attitude about all camp activities.

    Responsibilities and Key Functions:

    • Plan, direct, and supervise a safe and fun waterfront program.
    • Create (with the help of the Program Director) lesson plans that meet camp goals for all waterfront activities including swimming instruction, fishing, boating and canoeing.
    • Ensure the learn-to-swim program follow established goals and provide support and oversight for waterfront staff in the learn-to-swim program implementation.
    • Keep records on all participants, help them progress from beginner to advanced levels.
    • Ensure waterfront staff are enforcing and following all rules and are fulfilling all of their assigned duties.
    • Evaluate aquatics abilities of campers and staff.
    • Formally evaluate Lifeguards twice during the season and assist in setting and meeting goals.
    • Deliver safe and creative swim and watercraft program activities.
    • Coordinate with the Program Director, and any other staff to facilitate special events on the waterfront including Olympics event that has various water activities and challenges. 
    • Work with the Program Director to ensure appropriate lesson plans for each age group and monitor teaching quality, and actively aid staff in becoming better instructors.
    • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment.
    • Set up and ensure lifeguard duties/shifts.
    • Train and supervise waterfront staff.
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training.
    • Train waterfront in their waterfront responsibilities.
    • Supervise waterfront staff to provide a safe and high-quality program.
    • Supervise the waterfront staff evaluation process.
    • Implement the scheduling of waterfront staff.
    • Manage the physical facilities and equipment in the waterfront program area.
    • Set up waterfront area prior to and during staff training.
    • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment.
    • Conduct end-of-season inventory, and store equipment for safety.
    • Check equipment, and make (or file for) repairs.
    • Conduct a daily check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.

    • Survey waterfront area daily, and keep the area free of hazards and debris.
    • Inform the Camp Director of any camper or staff problems, issues, or concerns.
    • Positively recognition staff for work done well and positively recognize campers for their success when earned. 
    • Maintain a First Aid station with supplies and equipment at waterfront.
    • Assure waterfront areas are secured when not in use.
    • Schedule appropriate staff coverage for water activities.
    • Train and review waterfront lifesaving skills with staff (i.e., spinal injury, lost swimmer, seizure victims, etc.).
    • Implement ‘buddy’ system to account for all staff and campers during waterfront activities.
    • Participate in night activities as assigned.
    • Follow established health and safety standards of the ACA and Maine Dept. of Health.
    • Actively participate in staff training, meetings, etc.
    • Contribute to positive team environment by paying close attention to staff concerns, morale and performance issues and communicating them in a timely manner to the Camp Director.
    • Routine cleaning responsibilities related to the camp’s health and safety protocols.
    • Help out with all camp activities and participate as a member of the camp staff team.
    • Demonstrate and teach the values of Have Fun, Collaborate, Explore and Thrive to all campers and staff.
    • Follow all camp rules, regulations and policies and enforce them among peers.
    • Supervise end of season program operations clean up and inventories.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • At least three years of training and experience in waterfront activities and management.
    • At least 23 years old, valid driver’s license, and an acceptable driving record
    • Certification or availability to obtain certification as LGT and WSI.
    • Current Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid certifications or ability to participate in the course offered at camp.
    • Water Safety Instructor trained or ability to complete training at camp.
    • Familiar with American Camp Association accreditation standards and State of Maine regulations regarding waterfronts.
    • Capable to respond appropriately to emergencies and situations requiring first aid and/or CPR.

    Waterfront

    Boat Driver and Lifeguard

    $2,288.00 / season
    Poland, ME

    POSITION SUMMARY:  The Agassiz Village Lifeguard/Boat Driver facilitates full-day programs for youth ages 8-17. This role is responsible for driving the boats during the Waterfront activity periods and lifeguarding during free swim periods.  They are responsible for planning the boating curriculum and ensuring skills building for campers. They set up and break down the program area, facilitating students through the program elements, and maintaining safety.  Along with the Waterfront Director, they ensure that the Camp’s waterfront program and protocols are followed in compliance with the regulations for Department of Health and American Camp Association standards.  The ideal candidate will be skilled in facilitation and working with a variety of students and ages. Instructors work closely with the Director of Youth Development and Experience to ensure a service vision for Agassiz Village Summer Camp Program. Class size varies but typically the instructor will have 12-14 students per hour several times throughout the day.  When not actively working at the Waterfront, may act in the capacity of a Cabin Counselor with an assigned cabin group.

    1. Safely drive the boats for banana boating and tubing activities, while supervising campers and staff.
    2. Transport campers in boats to our islands for overnight camping experiences. 
    3. Supervise swimming activities at the waterfront and ensure campers are following policies, guidelines and safety procedures. 
    4. Warn swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforce all waterfront rules and water safety procedures. 
    5. Administer first aid in the event of injury, rescue swimmers in distress or in danger or drowning, and administer CPR if necessary. 
    6. Evaluate conditions for safety and initiate waterfront emergency action plan as required. 
    7. Formulate, plan, and lead safe, age appropriate, and enriching canoeing, kayaking and paddling activities that help children learn more about canoeing and develop their skills.
    8. Deliver progressive programming that builds on skills, so youth are making strides toward achieving goals.

    • Lifeguard certification is required for this position.  AV will provide all of the training. You must pass the tests.  If you do not pass the certifications, you will be assigned to a cabin group. 
    • Knowledge and ability to evaluate water conditions and determine any potential dangers or hazards.
    • Ability to adjust programs as necessary to ensure the safety of the kids.

    Camp Counselor

    $2,000.00 / season
    Poland, ME

    The Agassiz Village Cabin Counselor is responsible for ensuring overall camper well-being, keeping a cabin group of 12 campers (ages vary from 8-16) on schedule with activities, and leading camp activities.  A counselor’s work includes assisting with camper management during activities, in cabins, on sports fields, at the waterfront and in the dining hall. Counselors may lead daily activities, like crafts, outdoor games, musical performances, and may perform other responsibilities.  Counselors supervise and manage campers at all times, except during scheduled breaks.  Counselors participate in whole camp activities and special events such as talent shows, and camp competitions. Counselors also accompany youth on overnight trips to one of our islands. The Cabin Counselor is responsible for helping to implement Agassiz Village Social & Emotional Learning curriculum by setting a positive example for kids. Counselors set the tone of the cabin, create the cabin rules with youth, correct inappropriate behavior, and ensure personal grooming, cabin clean up, bedtime routines are happening. Counselors are the ambassadors of fun, while following all safety rules and regulations.   

    Responsibilities and Key Functions:

    1. Act as a role model in all aspects of camp and be expected to be fully and actively engaged with campers while on duty (including meals, cabin activities, program areas, special and all-camp events, etc.).
    2. Wake campers on time each morning. Greet them positively and by name each day. Communicate proper attire for the day and activities. Follow shower schedule and put kids to bed on time.
    3. Model positive and appropriate behavior including:
      1. a friendly, upbeat, and encouraging attitude
      2. a welcoming and inclusive manner towards others
      3. sportsmanship during competition
      4. helping campers negotiate peaceful and beneficial resolutions to conflict
    4. Build strong positive relationships with your campers by participating in meals, evening programs, etc.
    5. Take every opportunity to teach campers social and emotional skills such as relationship building, perseverance, self-reflection, goal setting and more as you encourage each camper to recognize what they are capable of through mentorship and daily conversations with youth.
    6. Implement daily Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum components: conduct self-reflection session with campers, assist campers with completing self-assessment forms as scheduled, ensure SEL self-assessment forms are turned in on time, and complete daily camper’s behavior logs.
    7. Plan and execute specific cabin group activities each day as scheduled and carry out daily cabin and village clean up.
    8. Respect the daily schedule of camp and ensure their campers are on time and attend scheduled activities.
    9. Promote and encourage program participation and positive behavior (i.e., sound judgment, calm problem solving, enthusiasm, appropriate use of language, silence during announcements, etc.).
    10. Enforce good manners during meals such as serving, passing, and eating of food as well as observe habits and diets of campers and report any health issues to the Health Center or Village Leader.
    11. Role model and enforce good daily personal hygiene, especially regarding washing hands before every meal, daily brushing of teeth and regular showers.
    12. Be sensitive to the camper’s individual needs, manage the behavior of their campers, especially regarding physical, emotional, or verbal abuse of others.
    13. Provide feedback to the Village Leader and fill out camper logs daily and submit them to the Village Leader.
    14. Work together as a team with the other counselors in and out of your cabin and village, creating a trustworthy, fun, and enjoyable environment.
    15. Ensure that all health regulations are followed: appropriate and diligent use of sunscreen and bug spray; addressing conditions like sniffles, coughing, rashes, sores, blisters, and head (or other) scratching; and getting enough rest, proper eating, and drinking plenty of water.
    16. Help the campers with daily self-maintenance tasks (i.e., helping campers prepare for swimming, etc.).
    17. Supervise and assist in daily cabin activities, rest period, meals, bedtime preparation, etc.
    18. Work closely with the Village Leader in coordinating cabin/village activities.
    19. Report maintenance needs to the Village Leader.
    20. Rotate with other staff, monitoring bunk after lights out - “on duty.”
    21. Be responsible for session ending cabin clean-up as well as ensuring all camper personal belongings get home at the end of the session.
    22. Accept direction, feedback from supervisors, and follow through appropriately.
    23. Act as a responsible member of the camp community both in and outside of the camp environment during periods of employment.
    24. Participate in staff and other meetings, such as in-service training and staff development and orientation activities.
    25. Perform all other duties as assigned.

    Social Work

    Youth Wellness Advocate Internship

    $400.00 / season
    Poland, ME

    This position is open to applicants currently pursuing a Bachelors or Masters in Behavioral/Wellness Health, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a M.E.S.H. related field. The Youth Advocate role is critical in supporting the behavioral, mental, social and wellness health of campers ages 8-17 throughout their time at our overnight summer camp. They are responsible for establishing strong, positive relationships with the youth at camp, as well as serve as a resource for other seasonal program staff. This is a residential position, requiring full-time residence at Agassiz Village’s camp from June 19 to August 9, 2024. Free room and board are provided as well as a stipend.

    Job Requirements and Responsibilities:

    • Youth advocates are assigned to a cabin section and work under our LCSW licensed Director of Camper Care and help establish and maintain healthy and appropriate relationships with youth, focusing on safety, support, interaction, and engagement.
    • Utilize strengths-based counseling with youth around issues such as homesickness, peer conflict, family issues, and mental health issues.
    • Anticipate and mitigate situations of difficult youth behavior.
    • Review cabin counselor notes twice daily identifying issues that may be developing and addressing those issues before they become more challenging.
    • Facilitate training for seasonal program staff.
    • Provide ongoing guidance and coaching to seasonal staff on how to appropriately respond to youth needs and behaviors.
    • Identify youth needs through discussion and observation then respond using the appropriate intervention.
    • Obtain personal care items and other resources for youth as needed.
    • Communicate with families to discuss their child’s successes and challenges while at camp, when necessary.
    • Consult with the Director of Camper Care and Camp Nurse regarding youth issues and/or disclosures; complete necessary documentation related to youth issues and/or disclosures.
    • Work one-on-one with campers who are having trouble participating in the program.
    • Be present throughout the day interacting with children during meal times, activities and rest periods helping to build a positive climate by ensuring youth feel welcomed, are warmly greeted, are valued and target the development of SEL skills.
    • Embed SEL instruction within regular activities, such as pausing a basketball lesson to teach strategies about how to persist through frustration, or enacting instructional strategies during regular activities that explicitly support SEL skill development, such as talking to children about how to work productively with one another in a group assignment.
    • Instruct stand-alone SEL lessons that explicitly targets SEL topics, such as relationship skills or identifying one’s emotions. These lessons can include the use of SEL lesson plans and pacing guides.
    • Help Cabin counselors to set the culture of camp by identifying cabin rules and expectations on how we treat each other and camp with respect, care and dignity.
    • Provide group support in the cabin setting including assisting with facilitating group conversations to help prevent bullying or other forms of negative behavior or aggression. 
    • Intervene if campers are experiencing significant behavioral challenges.
    • Help campers and staff resolve conflicts appropriately.
    • Provide support and guidance to staff as they deal with camper’s behavior problems.
    • Be available to step into situations that may arise during the camp and provide necessary assistance to the camper prior to allowing the camper to return to activities.
    • Assist in consulting and guiding staff to monitor the overall emotional and social wellbeing of the community.
    • Provide emotional support to staff and help aid in mediating staff conflicts and help monitor staff morale.
    • Keep Director of Camper Care informed of all situations and issues as they arise and provide daily updates through informal conversation and formal documentation.
    • As a mandated reporter, assist Director of Camper Care with appropriate calls to social services.

    Qualifications:

    • Student pursuing a Bachelors or Masters in Behavioral/Wellness Health, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a M.E.S.H. related field.
    • Comfortable working in an outdoor setting where campers and staff live and experience developing a positive community and active camp activities. Work hours may vary.
    • Willing and able to work as part of a team.
    • Understand at-risk youth.
    • Excellent verbal communications skills.
    • Possess the following qualities: patience, compassion, fairness, listening skills, and the ability to relate to children.
