THE REGION

Coldfoot, Alaska --- two hundred sixty miles north of the nearest traffic light in Fairbanks --- two hundred forty miles south of the Arctic Ocean – sixty miles north of the Arctic Circle --- sixty miles south of the northernmost extent of the tree line --- adjacent to the 8.2 million acre Gates of the Arctic National Park, the wilderness jewel of the National Park System --- surrounded by the remote wilderness and unpeopled expanses that are Alaska’s Brooks Mountain Range --- a landscape bathed in 24-hour daylight for four months [Apr 22 – Aug 20] --- located directly under the Aurora Oval, a geographic location that makes Coldfoot one of the very best places in the world to view the mysterious and awe-inspiring aurora borealis [Aug 21 – Apr 21] --- an arctic wilderness that only a self-selected few are fortunate enough to call home.

 


THE CAMP

Coldfoot Camp is located in Alaska at mile 175 of the Dalton Highway – the Dalton Highway comprises the final 500 miles of the Pan-American Highway and is the only road in the Western Hemisphere to reach the Arctic Ocean --- at the center of this activity is COLDFOOT CAMP --- a legendary full-service hospitality center offering food, lodging, fuel, outdoor activities, and other services for those working, living, and recreating in the region.

Central to the soulful hospitality found at Coldfoot Camp is the Trucker’s Café [featured prominently on the hit reality tv show Ice Road Truckers] --- the Trucker’s Café is open year-round, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week [serving food from 6:00 AM to Midnight] --- during the summer months, Coldfoot Camp offers delicious breakfast and dinner buffet service in addition to year-round menu service featuring truckstop-style fare --- a Dalton Highway hospitality oasis, Coldfoot Camp plays host to recreational travelers, truckers, workers, and locals alike --- a place for the community of travelers to meet on Alaska’s wilderness highway.

 


THE WORK

Coldfoot Camp’s summer season formally begins 01 June 2024 and ends 30 September 2024 --- ideally, a successful candidate will be available to begin work no later than late-May/early-June 2024 [or earlier!!!] and be available to work thru 30 September 2024 [or beyond!!!].

A coworker who successfully works through the 30 September 2024 season completion date [minimum 4-month season] will earn a $2,000.00 season completion bonus --- the intent of which is to help defray the costs associated with the coworker’s responsibility to provide their own transportation to/from Alaska.

ALL COWORKERS ARE PROVIDED A ROOM AND THREE MEALS PER DAY AT NO COST TO THE COWORKER.

GUIDE

RESPONSIBILITIES

The guide has primary responsibility for hosting recreational traveler guests from around the world who have traveled to Alaska [and, Coldfoot Camp] during summer “midnight sun” season to experience the Brooks Mountain Range and Gates of the Arctic National Park bathed in 24-hours of sunlight [and, enjoy other exciting summer excursions/activities] --- and, during fall “aurora” season to seek the aurora borealis at one of earth’s best aurora-viewing locations.

Specific excursions/activities offered to Coldfoot Camp guests during summer “aurora” season include ---

  • Arctic Mountain Safari --- 6-hour ground tour by van north of Coldfoot deep into the Brooks Mountain Range --- paralleling the Gates of the Arctic National Park --- and, reaching the Arctic Divide and beyond.
  • Arctic Circle Air Adventure --- 2-hour exploration of Coldfoot and Wiseman by van/foot for guests arriving/departing Coldfoot by air.
  • Arctic Circle Switch --- 2-hour ground tour from Coldfoot to the Arctic Circle [or, vice versa] for guests arriving/departing Coldfoot by ground.
  • Koyukuk River Float --- 2-hour guided raft adventure on the Koyukuk River.
  • Packraft Adventure --- 4-hour guided packraft/hiking exploration of the arctic wilderness adjacent to the Gates of the Arctic National Park.
  • Fat Tire Bike Adventure --- 2-hour guided bike ride on local trails.

During fall “aurora” season Coldfoot Camp guests also have the opportunity to witness the aurora borealis by joining the following excursion ---

  • Arctic Village Aurora --- 4-hour excursion to the nearby village of Wiseman for a very late-night cabin-based aurora-watching experience.

Specific guide responsibilities include ---

  • Prepare vehicle, equipment, and supplies for excursion/activity to be shared with guests.
  • Greet guests to communicate “adventure plan” prior to start of excursion/activity.
  • Share high-quality, relevant “stories” with guests while “on-stage”, infusing the experience with maximum meaningfulness.
  • Provide the physical, mental, emotional leadership required to ensure the excursion/activity is conducted safely --- yet, also infused with maximum joyfulness.
  • De-mob/clean/organize vehicle, equipment, and supplies upon excursion/activity completion.

The breakfast cook has primary responsibility for a diverse set of food production activities focused on cooking delicious, handcrafted meals in our "scratch" kitchen for an equally diverse make-up of guests [recreational travelers, truckers, and workers] in our 80-seat roadside café --- our summer “midnight sun” season breakfast service focuses primarily on buffet service.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Execute all food production activities required to put-up and re-supply a breakfast buffet.
  • Execute all food prep activities required for breakfast menu and/or buffet service.
  • Assist with production activities associated with “to-go” sack lunches for recreational traveler guest’s daytime activities away from Camp.
  • Assist with dishwashing activities as required.
  • Execute all cleaning activities required to leave the kitchen “absurdly clean” at the end of the shift.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Execute all food prep activities required for lunch service.
  • Assist with both prep and production activities associated with the “to-go” sack lunches for work crew and recreational traveler guests.

The night cook has primary responsibility for a diverse set of food production activities focused on cooking delicious, hand-crafted meals in our "scratch" kitchen for an equally diverse make-up of guests [recreational travelers, truckers, and workers] in our 80-seat roadside café --- our summer season foodservice features both menu and buffet service.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Execute final “line" food production activities required to fill night service menu orders.
  • Execute all food prep activities required for night menu service.
  • Assist with both prep and production activities associated with the production and assembly of “to-go” sack lunches.
  • Assist with dishwashing activities as required.
  • Execute all cleaning activities required to leave the kitchen “absurdly clean” at the end of the shift.

  • Work with a team of two/three coworkers to execute all food production activities required to put-up and re-supply a dinner buffet.
  • Execute all food prep activities required for dinner buffet service.
  • Execute all cleaning activities required to leave the kitchen “absurdly clean” at the end of the shift.

The baker has primary responsibility for all baking production activities required to support the ability of our “scratch” kitchen to cook delicious, handcrafted meals for a diverse make-up of guests [recreational travelers, truckers, and workers] in our 80-seat roadside café --- our summer “midnight sun” season food service features both breakfast and dinner buffet service along with menu service during non-buffet hours.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Execute all baking production activities required to support both buffet and menu service --- focus production activities include:  a sweet baked good and biscuits for breakfast buffet, desserts and bread for dinner buffet, hamburger buns for menu service, and cookies for over-the-counter sales.
  • Execute additional food prep activities as required.
  • Assist with production activities associated with “to-go” sack lunches for recreational traveler guest’s daytime activities away from Camp.
  • Assist with dishwashing activities as required.

The cleaner has primary responsibility for working with a team to carry-out all activities associated with executing on our "absurd cleanliness" mission --- cleaning responsibilities are focused on 109 guest rooms along with adjacent public areas and common restroom/shower facilities.

The host has primary responsibility for a VERY diverse set of guest-service activities focused on extending soulful hospitality to an equally diverse make-up of guests [travelers, locals, and workers] in our 80-seat roadside café. 

Specific host responsibilities include ---

  • Greet guests upon their entering the café [and, soulfully determine their needs].
  • Respond to guest questions regarding the Camp, the region, or the highway.
  • Seat those guests choosing to dine with us, take orders, and serve food/drink.
  • Cashier all Camp sales [meals, lodging, fuel, gift, mercantile].
  • Check-in overnight lodging guests.
  • Keep gift area organized and welcoming [fold, fold, fold!!!].
  • Clean café and public restrooms.
  • Assist with fuel and propane fill-ups when required.
  • Assist with dishwashing activities as required.
  • Assist with food prep activities as required.

Specific host responsibilities include:

  • Greet guests upon their entering the café [and, soulfully determine their needs].

  • Seat those guests choosing to dine with us, take orders, and serve food/drink.
  • Cashier all Camp sales [meals, lodging, fuel, gifts, mercantile].
