Facilities Worker

$15.51 - $16.17 / hour

Lincolnville, Tenants Harbor

The essential duties of this position are to maintain sanitation and grounds at the University of Maine 4-H Camps at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove. This position is part-time seasonal (May-October) and is located in Lincolnville and Tenants Harbor, Maine.

The 4-H Camps at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove provide environmentally-focused programs for Maine youth and families in Lincolnville and Tenants Harbor. Our mission is to teach youth and adults to be effective and caring citizens of the earth through affordable environmental education and fun nature-based experiences.

Responsibilities

Perform general janitorial duties including cleaning sinks, toilets, and showers on a daily basis; sweeping and mopping; and ensuring all soap and paper products are regularly stocked.
Maintain facilities and grounds, including mowing, weeding, gardening, trimming trees, and picking up litter.
Operate and maintains a variety of vehicles, equipment, and tools; complete routine maintenance on equipment, tools, and vehicles.
Make minor building repairs, move furniture and equipment, and perform related duties.
Follow proper safety protocols when handling and working with materials and chemicals associated with cleaning.
Report maintenance issues and equipment failures as appropriate.
Maintain inventory within assigned area of responsibility.
Adhere to safety procedures, including reporting mechanical and/or safety issues.
Perform other duties of a similar nature as assigned.

Food Services Supervisor

$20.20 / hour

Lincolnville, Tenants Harbor

The kitchen staff at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove work closely with the directors to ensure the dietary needs of everyone at camp are met. The Food Services Supervisor (aka Lead Cook) will work with the camp director in ordering food, creating schedules, and making sure the kitchen is kept at Maine State health code standards. This position is part-time seasonal (April-October) and is located in Lincolnville and Tenants Harbor, Maine.

Responsibilities

Prepare and cook healthy meals and snacks for the camp, using whole foods and fresh produce
Safely operate commercial cooking equipment: mixer, dishwasher, and stoves; know when machines and knives need repair and specialized cleaning.
Work as part of a team with other cooks and kitchen assistants in all aspects of food service operations
Oversee and assist staff in safe food preparation, serving, and clean-up.
Model safe and efficient ways of working in a commercial kitchen.
Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen facility in compliance with State of Maine standards and regulations.
Work with directors in menu planning, food ordering, and preparing menus.
Utilize produce from the camp’s garden.
Pack up food after each meal and help clean the kitchen so it is ready for the next meal to begin.
Follow established protocols for the camp composting program.

Qualifications

Prior experience cooking nutritious and wholesome foods for large groups in a commercial kitchen
Current ServSafe Food Safety Manager Certification (this is a requirement of the DHHS, if unable to attain we will work with qualified hired candidates to do so)
Understanding of food allergies/dietary restrictions and how to safely accommodate them
High safety and sanitation standards

Program Leader

$500.00 / week

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove provide environmentally focused summer camps for Maine youth in Lincolnville and Tenants Harbor. Programs emphasize community living, respect for others, fun, safety, responsibility, and the joy of being a part of the natural world.

As a 4-H Program Leader, you will work closely with the Director and Program Coordinator to ensure a successful summer program for both counselors and campers. Each week will vary in duties and intensity depending on which programs are in camp and where support is needed. As a staff support team member, you will play a crucial role in mentoring best practices for maintaining program quality, participant safety and wellness, and staff wellness. Time management and the ability to work independently at times are necessary.

Responsibilities

Attend staff training and assist with facilitation. Help to educate staff regarding daily community responsibilities and program area specifics: day camp, residential camp, trips and leadership, waterfront supervision, or supervision of staff under 18 years of age
Serve as a support person for staff and a liaison between staff and camp administration. In this role, be prepared to facilitate the resolution of group conflicts among staff or campers and strive to develop a cooperative setting that encourages problem-solving and decision-making.
Check-in weekly with each staff member in your living unit/group. Regularly monitor the conditions of the living unit to ensure health, safety, and harmony for campers and staff
Meet with camp administration regularly (weekly) to discuss areas of camp needing support (SST meetings)
Assist with regular night-time camp-wide “rounds” and after-midnight curfew checks. Provide night coverage as scheduled.
Substitute into cabins for weeks when extra counselors are needed
Evaluate the program with camp administration at least twice during the summer. Assist camp administration in one-on-one staff check-ins twice during the summer.
Role model good stewardship for the environment, and support our efforts by participating in the garden, composting, and adopting sustainable practices throughout all aspects of your role.
Participate in community chores, meal service, and miscellaneous maintenance duties as required. Aid and/or support in other areas of the camp as needed. Be able and prepared to drive the camp van when needed.

Day Camp Educator

The 4-H Camps at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove provide environmentally focused summer camps for Maine youth in Lincolnville and Tenants Harbor. Programs emphasize community living, respect for others, fun, safety, responsibility, and the joy of being a part of the natural world.

As a Day Camp Educator, you’ll spend your days working with youth ages 5-11 in an outdoor setting. Day Camp Staff work in teams to plan and lead hands-on, engaging programming that encourages community, creativity, and respect for one another and the environment.

Goal: A successful Summer Educator models a positive, accepting, and respectful attitude to create an inviting and supportive environment in which all can grow, learn and thrive alongside the Earth.

Day Camp Educator Responsibilities

Work in a team to develop, coordinate, and implement daily camp programs that offer hands-on environmental learning for campers ages 5-11. Activities will be offered in outdoor and indoor areas and topics may include gardening, ecology, watersheds, art, drama, STEM, music, and cooperation. Topics can be taught through exploration, games, puppetry, art, songs, and stories.
Welcome parents and provide communication regarding schedules, individual campers, safety, behaviors, etc.

Supervise and ensure the safety of campers at all times.

Overnight Camp Educator

Lincolnville, Tenants Harbor

As an Overnight Camp Educator, you’ll spend your weeks working with youth aged 8-14 in an outdoor setting. Staff work in teams to plan and lead morning focus programs, afternoon electives, and evening programs (creative arts, STEM, archery, general ecology, gardening & cooking, marine ecology, wilderness skills, 4-H Hunter Safety, conservation education, and drama are examples of potential themes).

Live in a cabin with campers and, along with a co-counselor, create the necessary atmosphere for a safe and positive camp experience (staff/camper ratio = 1:4-8).
Plan, implement and evaluate a hands-on curriculum for youth in a week-long, morning program (8-16 youth per group, 1:8 ratio max).
Help to plan and carry out camp activities such as afternoon elective programming (teaching 1 lesson per day), special events, opening and closing ceremonies, evening programs, campfires, etc.
Actively engage with campers during all program activities, cabin times, and mealtimes.

Day Camp Counselor Responsibilities

Program Coordinator

As a Summer Program Coordinator (SPC) at Tanglewood/Blueberry Cove, your role is pivotal in ensuring the success of diverse Summer Programs. Collaborating closely with the Director and program leadership team, you’ll be responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating our overnight camp, leadership and trips programs. You will serve as a mentor for staff, providing supervision, support, and feedback. You will also be a key support for campers, leading check-in sessions and being a point person for challenging conflicts. The Summer Program Coordinator supports the intangible magic of camp, melding education, engagement, and fun creatively. You have a deep appreciation for summer camp and are committed to creating positive, life changing experiences for campers and staff.

Responsibilities

Support Camp Director by providing coordination, in a team setting, to plan, promote, conduct, and evaluate the Summer Programs at Tanglewood/Blueberry Cove. This includes Overnight Camp, Day Camp, and Leadership Programs.
Plan and co-facilitate a week-long, comprehensive staff training
Assist with hiring and staff onboarding prior to the start of camp
Assist in the training, supervision, and evaluation of the summer staff. Facilitate meetings for program planning, debriefing, and community building
Serve as role model to inspire the staff to lead youth in a constructive and creative manner, offer support and guidance to counselors
Organize daily/weekly schedules for 25+ staff, including morning focus, afternoon electives and evening programs.
Serve as Director on duty when Camp Director is off site, including scheduled overnight responsibility each week
Work with camp program team to develop, acquire, maintain, and improve the teaching materials, resources and equipment that are needed to carry-out the summer program.
Assist with development of marketing materials, including catalog copy, press releases, camper recruitment, website, etc.
Assist with maintaining records of programs and submit periodic reports.
Be available to assist the camp director in additional administrative duties as required.
Lead weekly meetings on Sunday to establish camp rules and expectations for health, safety, and behavior.
Meet with camp administration regularly (weekly) to discuss areas of camp needing support
Evaluate programming with camp administration on an ongoing basis. Assist camp administration in one-on-one staff check-ins twice during summer.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in related field or related experience
At least 3 years related experience working in a camp setting, 25+ age preferred
Experience developing environmental curricula and programming
Experience leading staff trainings or in-services
Experience supervising staff and providing positive mentorship
Experience maintaining websites and working with camp management systems

Trips and Leadership Program Instructor

$500.00 / week

Lincolnville, Tenants Harbor

As a trip and leadership program instructor, you will serve as a mentor and coach as teens learn different leadership styles while hiking, canoeing, and camping adventures during multiple-week sessions. Programs will focus on leadership styles, communication skills, group building, and environmental education and ethics. To be effective, instructors must have a genuine interest in building their capacity as positive role models through teaching applicable hard skills needed to find success.

Responsibilities

Attend and actively participate in a two-week-long paid staff training where practical skills are practiced, reviewed, and tested to ensure comfortability when leading and teaching campers
Co-lead 1, 2, or 3-week outdoor leadership programs for teenagers (co-ed, max. 10/session). Each program session includes a 3-6 day camping, hiking, and/or canoeing trip. NOTE: Include some weekend work during the program session.
Plan lessons and schedules and implement a leadership curriculum that covers a variety of skills including listening, communication, team-building, low-impact camping, conflict resolution, canoe safety, canoeing skills, map and compass, general ecology, personal health and safety, and knot-tying.
Prepare food for trips and coordinate logistical support, food/equipment deliveries, emergency support, etc.
Supervise and ensure the safety of campers at all times; facilitate resolution of group conflicts and strive to encourage problem-solving and decision-making; live in and supervise cabin of up to 6 program participants.
Role model healthy living, positive energy, clear communication, and good stewardship for the environment.
Actively engage with campers during lessons, recreation, and mealtimes.
Evaluate the program regularly with the Program Leader and Director.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent
Minimum of 2 years related experience working with teenagers and teaching in the outdoors or equivalent
Experience leading camping/backpacking/canoeing trips
Ability to lead groups outdoors over various terrain with 35+ lbs. packs for extended days and the ability to assist in carrying canoes (85 lb.) with others
Demonstrate responsible and safe decision-making skills in all aspects of outdoor camp programming
Wilderness First Aid & CPR and lifeguard certification (or ability to obtain before the start of training)

Preferred Qualifications

Valid Driver’s license and clean driving record
Wilderness First Responder, Small Craft Water Safety Certification
Ability to obtain a trip leader permit (we train for this as part of your orientation, must pass the test with 85%)

Open Air Classroom Environmental Educator

$500.00 - $550.00 / week

Lincolnville

The 4-H Learning Centers at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove provide environmentally focused outdoor education programs for Maine youth in Lincolnville and Tenants Harbor. Programs emphasize community living, respect for others, fun, safety, responsibility, and the joy of being a part of the natural world. Tanglewood in Lincolnville, Maine has 900+ acres of forest, extensive hiking trails, and a pristine river with native Atlantic Salmon. Blueberry Cove, located on the ocean in Tenants Harbor, Maine, provides many outdoor opportunities including sailing and kayaking.

As an Environmental Educator, you will provide hands-on ecology immersion for students as part of our Open Air Classroom. All school programming is customized and highlights our Earth Connections curriculum and BEETLES teaching methodology. Programs work with students across grades K-12. As an Educator, you will develop and implement the program curriculum, schedules, and new projects.

We look for staff to join us for the entire program season April - early November, but we are open to discussing shorter one-season options or seasonal combinations. Staff that work for the full 6 month period will receive a an additional pay bump.

Spring Appointment: Mid April through early June 2024; educators focus on our Open Air Classroom programs with school, working primarily with 2nd-8th grade students in day and overnight programming at Tanglewood or supporting day and after school programs at Blueberry Cove.

Summer Appointment: Mid-June through mid-August 2024; educators serve in roles during summer programs, either as program leaders, day camp or overnight camp educators, or teen leadership instructors.

Fall Appointment: Mid-September through early November 2024; programs run similarly to the Spring season.

Goal: foster a sense of community between students and teachers that draws from the interconnectedness of the natural world; encourage curiosity in students through modeling your own curiosity for learning; and contribute to the further development of engaging and meaningful experiential programs.

Spring/Fall/Winter Responsibilities:

Develop and teach hands-on, ecology, STEM, group building, and outdoor skills-based lessons to grades K-12 for the day, overnight, and after-school programs
Deliver programs in schools and at multiple sites, including our learning centers in Lincolnville and Tenants Harbor, ME (some travel is required)
Contribute ideas for the continual development of programs, interpretive trails, and educational displays
Work independently and with staff to develop and maintain teaching resources
Participate actively in staff training, ongoing professional development, and daily staff meetings to plan and evaluate programs
Take part in routine tasks of cleaning and kitchen duties, gardening, general camp chores, and upkeep of program spaces to support the staff community

Typical work week Monday through Friday with some evening (1-2 nights per week no later than 9 PM) and weekend program responsibilities

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent
Experiential education experience with youth, preferably in an outdoor setting
Knowledge of ecological concepts and natural history
Ability to work in an active, outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions
Safely lead groups over various terrain (uneven ground, roots, uphill hiking), while carrying a small backpack with teaching and first aid supplies
Basic First Aid/CPR certification, complete upon arrival
Hold a valid driver’s license with the ability to drive camp vehicles, tow canoe trailers at times

Preferred Qualifications:

Wilderness First Aid
Lifeguard certification

Dates and Compensation:

Spring, April 22 - June 7, 2024; Summer, June 12 - August 16, 2024, and September 6 - November 3, 2024
$500-$550/week (pre-tax) with increases dependent on experience and certifications and additional bonus for a commitment to all 3 program seasons
Rustic housing with kitchen facilities provided; meals provided when overnight programs are in session, staff are responsible for assisting with some meal preparation and clean up
