Currently recruiting for the season that runs from March 1st, 2024 to November 30th, 2024.
- Work as part of an SCC recruiting and member development team to develop and implement a recruitment strategy
- Participate in recruiting visits to schools, community partners, career fairs, etc.
- Coordinate and complete interviewing, selection, and placement of 100-150 corps members annually.
- Complete Crew Leader and Crew Leader Development Program (CLDP) hiring, including writing position descriptions, screening applicants, and offering positions.
- Work in an office setting. Facilitate and manage the submission of all participant hiring, program, and AmeriCorps paperwork
- Oversee and mentor staff in the field. Provide technical expertise, guidance, and emotional support to crew leaders in the field. Identify positive working solutions to crew management issues for leaders.
- Ensure project quality and quantity by providing technical assistance to and accountability of crew leaders in the field
- Model risk management procedures in the field to create a safe working environment
- Manage and participate in leader debriefs after each hitch
- Enforce all SCC policies and procedures
- Comfortability and flexibility with an ever-shifting work schedule
- Respond to crew emergency situations and participate in an on-call system for crews in the field
- Coordinate regular field visits with program staff as needed
- Review incidents, workers comp claims and process accordingly as per Conservation Legacy protocols
- Work with SCC staff to design, coordinate, and instruct in-house training of crew leaders and program participants including technical trails, crosscut, chainsaw, mental health, administrative, Wilderness First Aid, leadership, and facilitation skills
- Being a role model and mentor, providing encouragement guidelines and supervisions to leaders throughout the 9-week training period and continuing into the field season
- Develop and maintain partnerships with community and project partners
- Work closely with the administrative staff to ensure compliance of paperwork tasks and AmeriCorps requirements for yourself, leaders, and corps members
- Manage multiple databases for recruitment, selection, in-season management, and exiting of participants
- Work within an established program budget; manage credit cards, receipts, and financial reporting
- Assist with ensuring leader and CLDP compliance of credit card reconciliations
- Assist Adult Programs Manager and Director with year-end reports
- Collect, manage, and disperse program paperwork. Verify accuracy of all paperwork including timesheets, post hitch accomplishments, photos, etc.

- Minimum of 3 years of experience in youth development, conservation corps, or related field.
- Experienced skill level in all or most of the following: trail construction and maintenance, crosscut and chainsaw operation and maintenance, fencing, herbicide application, GIS, front country and backcountry travel
- Prior experience with planning, teaching or facilitating trainings for the above skills
- Experience leading Conservation Corps programs, members, or administrative systems
- Maintain a B-Level or higher Saw Certification to lead or assist in saw trainings for Leaders, Adult Crews and Veterans Fire Corps (VFC) Crews
- Assist in developing positions for the Ecological Monitoring program with many different project partners.
- Develop, oversee, and evaluate an effective strategy to recruit and advertise 38-50 crew personnel positions, collaborating with other staff as necessary.
- Monitor and review incoming applications for volume and quality.
- Interview, select, and onboard crew leads and members in a timely manner, collaborating externally and internally as necessary.
- Collect, compile, and process all required intake and enrollment materials for Crew Leaders and Members.
- Co-manage with the Individual Placements (IP) program any IPs that are funded by AIM-related agreements and whose roles directly contribute to the partner’s larger efforts of Ecological Monitoring program.
- Assist in creating and delivering internal orientations and trainings, intentionally aligning with Conservation Legacy’s strategic initiatives.
- Proactively visit, assist, and support crews in the field as needed.
- Facilitate and encourage opportunities for crew lead and member development.
- Continue with technical program-specific education, training, and industry exposure.
- Work with BLM State and Field Office staff contacts and other corps to support CO and NM BLM AIM programs.
- Facilitate crews’ attendance to technical trainings (provided each year by the BLM), as well as other trainings requested by the BLM.
- Facilitate consistent field operations and share best practices/learning lessons.
- Supervise and mentor a cohort of Ecological Monitoring crews and related IPs.
- Ensure that timesheets are completed promptly and correctly.
- Enforce and monitor appropriate risk management and all SCC Policies and Procedures across the program.
- Review and follow up on incident reports, vehicle accident reports, and worker’s compensation claims.
- Assist with vehicle leasing, remote fleet management, remote gear cache management, and other program logistics.
- Develop and implement effective and efficient administrative systems for recruitment, enrollment, management, evaluation, exits, reporting, and marketing.
- Maintain regular remote communications with crews.
- Collaborate with crews and staff to maintain and improve program operations and quality.
- Work to maintain high retention and satisfy partners through regular communication with crews.
- Coordinate, review, and follow up on completion and quality of crew evaluations.
- Participate in staff meetings, and support other staff as appropriate.
- Abide by Conservation Legacy’s credit cardholder and spending policies, including providing proper associated documentation.
- Participate in SCC’s internal, rotating emergency on-call system.
- Maintain productive relationships and interface significantly with other staff regarding administrative details.
- Attend off-season SCC/Conservation Legacy retreats and operations development events.
- Assist with activities of other programs of SCC.

- College graduate (Bachelor’s, at minimum) with coursework in ecology, botany, range science, soil science, wildlife biology, natural resource management, conservation biology, or a related field OR some college-level coursework in the above subject area(s) and one full sampling season performing AIM methodology, or highly similar, in a leadership capacity

Crew members will go through S-212 chainsaw training and will earn their United States Forest Service A-faller chainsaw certification upon completion.
- Crosscut Crew(Durango) – Crew works in remote Wilderness areas, clearing down trees from trails with a two-person crosscut saw. Crew members will go through crosscut saw training and receive a federally recognized certification upon completion.

The Womens+, Queer, Leaders of Color Affinity Crews seek to create a safe, non-judgmental, and inclusive space for all regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual identity or expression. - Women’s+ Chainsaw Crew(Durango & Salida) – An affinity crew for Women (both trans + cis) as well as non-binary individuals with project work focusing on sustainable forestry, fuels reduction, or invasive species removal (with the potential to use herbicide). Crew members will go through S-212 chainsaw training and will earn their United States Forest Service A-faller chainsaw certification upon completion.
- Queer Crew(Durango)– An affinity crew for LGBTQAI2S+ individuals. This crew work on a variety of projects, in both front country and backcountry settings. This will allow crew members to gain experience in and understanding of several aspects of conservation work.
- Leaders of Color Conservation Crew (Salida) – An affinity crew for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color) community members in both a backcountry and front country setting, focusing on trails and a variety of conservation work. This will allow crew members to gain experience in and understanding of several aspects of conservation work.
- To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 30

- Supervise, mentor and evaluate multiple operational and administrative staff including, but not limited to, the Program Director, and an Administrative Manager(s), that varies depending on structure and volume. Guide and help mentor shared SCC staff: Individual Placement Program Director and Recruitment Outreach and Communications Specialist.
- Ensure that all staff members are following business and operational support policies and protocols of SCC and Conservation Legacy.
- Organize staff to meet the needs of the Los Valles programs understanding our different program models (Veterans Fire Corps, Adult Camping Crews, High School Crews and Community Crews, Small Teams, Individual Placements and other single identity crews) as well as new emerging models to meet the needs of partnering agencies.
- Oversee the professional development and performance evaluation of all SCC Los Valles staff.
- Serve as the primary contact with Conservation Legacy Central Office for operational matters for the SCC Los Valles office.
- Support and encourage staff to engage with strategic organization initiatives not limited to working groups associated with the implementation of the Conservation Legacy Strategic Plan.
- Develop and maintain project partner relationships with an aim toward sustainability and leveraging to new project opportunities.
- Leads a high-quality of programming for positive member experience and exceptional project accomplishments, solidified by successful outcomes related to strategic plan goals and specific corps-relate goals.

The position is approximately 80% office-based and 20% field-based, with field visits that may include overnight stays. They must be available for emergency trips to the field. The Ecological Monitoring Program Coordinator reports to the SCC Ecological Monitoring Program Manager based out of the Durango, CO office.
SCC was awarded a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) grant from the Colorado (CO) and New Mexico (NM) BLM State Offices to support small corps teams, each typically consisting of a Crew Lead and one to three Crew Members. Under this grant, SCC and sub-recipient Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC) work collaboratively with BLM personnel to complete vegetative, soil, and/or stream resource surveys according to the Assessment, Inventory, & Monitoring methodology across CO and NM with many BLM Field and District Offices. At SCC, this cohort of crews and staff is known as the Ecological Monitoring Program. The continuation of this initiative and this position is funding dependent.

Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, communities and environment through hands-on work on primarily public lands. SCC Crews work with local land management agencies, municipalities, and non-profits to complete impactful conservation work. Project may include but are not limited to: trail construction and maintenance, habitat restoration, agricultural projects or a wide variety of community improvement projects.
A Crew Leader mentors a Crew Leader in Development (CLDP) as they work together to lead a 6-8 person high school or middle school crew (Durango only) during the summer season. Crew Leaders will be responsible for helping their CLDP pair create and follow a leadership development plan. Over the course of the season, the CLDP will gain the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to take on full Crew Leader responsibilities the following season. CLDPs are responsible for assisting Crew Leaders in ensuring the safety and well-being of their crew, project implementation, creating educational opportunities, and program paperwork each week. Crews work Monday – Friday and may be camping crews or day crews. Local students aged 14-18 are hired to complete a variety of projects. 1 day a week is an education day. Crew Leaders and CLDP’s work long days and may work from remote communities, away from the main office. All leaders and CLDPs will spend April and May in an intensive crew leader training. About the Position: As an AmeriCorps program participant with the Southwest Conservation Corps, your office is the great outdoors! Each crew consists of 6 members and 2 leaders. Crews work and camp for 8 days at a time in either front country (access to your crew vehicle and trailer), in town (working with the county or municipality), or backcountry (hiking all your supplies in with backpacks) locations. You will work effectively as a member of the crew; perform strenuous physical work related to environmental conservation and restoration projects; work outdoors in all types of weather and successfully adapt to various climates; effectively learn and apply new environmental conservation and restoration skills; actively participate in environmental education activities if they are provided; practice appropriate safety procedures in all tasks assigned; use, maintain and repair hand and power tools as necessary.
Projects may include trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation, weeding, herbicide treatment, fencing, facility maintenance, and local environmental service projects. Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises.
Schedules consist of 10-hour days that are typically 8-days on and 6 off. There is a possibility you could work 4 days on and 3 days off, or a variation of schedules requiring all AmeriCorps crew members to show flexibility in scheduling.
All crews will go through a 5-day (unpaid) volunteer orientation (May 27th – May 31st, 2024). This will include Wilderness First Aid training. Food and a space to camp is provided for this training.
We will be running the following crews during the 2024 season. We will speak to the work that each of these crews completes during the interview and will discuss your preferences at that time.

The AmeriCorps (AC) Crew Leader Development Program (CLDP) is a two-phase program. The first phase focuses on orientation, training and development, the second phase focuses on implementation and continued leadership development. The AmeriCorps CLDP will spend 8 weeks in a crew leader training period, which will include a Leadership skills week, Chainsaw training, technical trails training, a youth crew leader training, and prep weeks in addition to project work. Each CLDP will be paired with an experienced crew leader who will provide mentorship and support to them through a goal setting process and CLDP development plan. CLDPs are responsible for assisting Crew Leaders in ensuring the physical safety and emotional well-being of their crew.
