Company Mission & Overview: 

Riptide Café was opened in 2016 to provide quality coffee to the island community and guests of San Juan Safaris, our tour company aiming to provide high quality whale watching and wildlife tours. Riptide Café is a seasonal café that operates out of our waterfront San Juan Safaris office in Friday Harbor, WA. Riptide café serves Stumptown Coffee as well as fresh fruit smoothies, some breakfast options and limited baked goods. 

Riptide Cafe is owned and operated by the same owners as San Juan Safaris and San Juan Island Outfitters. We strive to create a team environment for our staff in hopes of having a memorable summer experience. Our staff members depend on each other to support each job function throughout various positions within the company. Because of the size of our company and the work environment we have created, we are more like a big extended family. 

Position Overview: 

Seeking an enthusiastic and customer service-oriented baristas that work well in a team. Tasks include but are not limited to; preparing coffee, smoothies, and food items, effective time management, providing the highest quality customer service, working well under pressure and ensuring the highest quality of products are served. We are looking for someone with a positive attitude that shows up everyday ready to work. 

Meet guests from around the world as they travel through our little town of Friday Harbor. Whether it’s engaging with locals coming in for their favorite cup of coffee and conversation or someone visiting for the first time. We aim to provide a positive experience for everyone that walks through our doors. Our waterfront seating has a view that can’t be beat. Enjoy making craft coffee with the backdrop of the beautiful Salish Sea, if you are lucky whales might even swim by to say hello. 

Roles & Responsibilities: 

• Preparing and serving food and beverage to highest standard 
• Maintaining a clean and orderly workspace
• Receiving and processing payments 
• Providing the customer with a memorable experience 

Qualifications & Skills: 

Minimum Qualifications & Skills: 

• Customer service experience 
• High attention to detail and cleanliness 
• Engaging and has the ability to respond to different types of characters  
• Excellent communication with team members and managers 
• Treating guests, coworkers, managers with respect 
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment 

Preferred Qualifications & Skills: 

• Barista experience on La Marzocco or manual espresso machine 
• Barista or relevant food service experience
• Washington Food Handlers Card
• Knowledge of craft coffee and/or beverages 

Training: There will be comprehensive paid training shifts with our manager on the coffee origins, espresso machine, recipes, processes, and procedures.

Employees are also able to use equipment on their own such as SUPs, sit-on-top kayaks, and sea kayaks with the necessary training.  

Housing: Riptide Café Staff are required to live on San Juan Island during the tenure of their employment. Staff are required to find their own housing though Riptide Café will assist if needed by either renting a room to the employee in the company’s employee housing complexes or assisting in the process of finding a seasonal rental. Riptide Café is dedicated to ensuring each seasonal staff member has a quality living situation during the duration of their employment.
