Water taxi and kayaking in Prince William Sound

One stop adventure center in Whittie Alaska - live and work in Prince William Sound Alaska

Lazy Otter Charters is a one-stop adventure center in Prince William Sound from Whittier Alaska. Our family owned operation offers custom sightseeing, guided kayaking and water taxi services for campers and kayakers. Prince William Sound's spectacular setting and our high energy atmosphere makes Lazy Otter Charters a fun place to work, where life long friendships and memories are made.

Whittier Alaska is 60 miles south of Anchorage and sits in the heart of the Chugach National Forest. This is the gateway to western Prince William Sound and access to designated wilderness. We like to say Whittier is unique, even by Alaska standards. We are located at the end of a one way tunnel, but only a hour by road to Anchorage.

About Lazy Otter Charters

Lazy Otter Charters is family-owned and operated in Whittier Alaska.  We have three vessels offering customized glacier and wildlife tours, water taxi for kayakers, guided kayaking adventures, photo and film support and freight services around Prince William Sound.  We also operate a whimsical and charming café on the harbor in Whittier, and a fudge/gift shop.  We are celebrating 30 years of operating in Whittier and Prince William Sound are a cornerstone business in the community.

The Employee Experience

The best part of being in business as long as we have, in a small community, is the people with who we get to work. Most of our employees return for many seasons in a row.  Many of our employees have  3- 5 years of longevity.    The most successful applicants are flexible and enjoy a dynamic environment.   Our cafe/fudge/gift shop is a fun, fast-paced cafe serving espresso, baked goods, lunch items, soft-serve ice cream and we make the fudge in the shop.  The cafe also serves as our charter office so it is very busy with a energetic atmosphere.  Our customers are here on adventures and we are a part of their experience. Customer service is a high priority for us.

Ideal Candidate

Ideal candidates working with Lazy Otter Charters and our Cafe are looking for a small company where they can share their talents in a more intimate company - not a corporate atmosphere.

Employees interested in the cafe should have previous customer service and food handling experience.  We enjoy a gregarious disposition and an  "aggressive friendliness"

Onboard the boats we are looking for applicants with a background and/or interest in science and natural history to share with our guests.

Flexibility and comfort in a dynamic atmosphere is a must during our very busy summer season.

People who like outdoor activities and can create their own fun in a place - with out many "city amenities" do best in our small -rural- town.

Room and Board

We have shared housing accommodations.  Managers/Captains will share an apartment but, in most cases, will have a separate bedroom.  Other staff may share a bedroom with one other person.  Apartments are fully furnished and we charge $300 per month for housing.  Our community of Whittier is very unique in that most of the housing is in one large building called Begich Towers.  Laundry facilities are available in the building.  The building is about 10 minute walk or 3 minute drive from our office/cafe and the harbor.

Employee Perks

Employees may join any of our tours or water taxis when there is space.  Lazy Otter owns a few kayaks and employees are welcome to enjoy.  Discounted tours often available through out Alaska during the shoulder season and there is amazing hiking opportunities in Whittier.

Whittier is 1 hour south of Anchorage.  If employees do not come with a car, transportation is available to Anchorage for shopping.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Whittier is one hour south of Anchorage via the well-traveled Seward Highway.  Whittier is accessible via a one-way tunnel.  The tunnel into Whittier opens on the 1/2 hour i.e., 7:30, 8:30, 9:30.. and out on the hour i.e., 7:00, 8:00...

Anchorage is the nearest airport and large city for grocery shopping and supplies.  If employees do not have transportation we will pick them up at the airport and get them to Whittier. Transportation is available to get to Anchorage periodically for grocery and supply shopping.

A car is not necessary in Whittier - everything is close enough to walk.  Employees are welcome to bring a bike.

For Fun

If you enjoy the outdoors this is the place for you.  Fantastic hiking, kayaking, fishing and other out door adventures are easy to take advantage of.

Whittier is a small town- 300 year round residents and about 800 seasonal.  Entertainment is what you make of it.  There are several other tour operators in town so there are many like-minded folks in town to get to know.  Its like and instant community.
