This position will assist in the execution of winter special events at the resort. Winter special events include things like alpine ski races and freeride ski & snowboard competitions, ranging from 100 to 1,000 attendees. The Winter Events Team Member will work very closely with the special events and mountain operations departments as well as in coordination with the Grand Targhee Ski and Snowboard Foundation (GTSSF) to maximize the success of each event. This individual will play an active role in one or more of the disciplines of Alpine ski racecourse set-up/break-down, freeride event registration or check-in, as a freeride course ninja or event announcing. This role will need to be on site for all events necessitating in weekend and evening hours as needed based on event schedules.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the successful execution of several types of competitive events including alpine ski races and freeride ski and snowboard events in the winter 2023/2024 season.
- Take ownership of a designated aspect of the event, under the guidance and direction of the special events manager including event set-up, day-of execution, event breakdown while having strong follow through and communication skills throughout the event from inception to completion.
- As a part of the special events team, work in cooperation and collaboration with Grand Targhee Resort’s mountain operations, ski patrol, marketing, guest services, lift operations, facilities and food & beverage teams.
- Under the guidance of the special events manager, work in coordination with the Grand Targhee Ski and Snowboard Foundation (GTSSF) during specific alpine ski races and freeride ski & snowboard events when necessary.
- Attend pre- and post-event meetings as required to review/communicate special event needs and provide feedback that will help improve the planning and execution process for future events.
- Work independently and/or in a team environment, safely and responsibly on the mountain during event set-up, day-of execution and and/or event breakdown.
- Remain calm under pressure and in the handling of sometimes stressful situations, remain flexible to change as events happen (daily function).
- Move around the mountain via multiple modes including on foot, on skis/snowboard, and on lifts.
- Carry out the execution of assigned tasks in an often fast paced environment in a safe, thorough and timely manner, being comfortable asking for help when necessary.
- Bring a collaborative, solutions-driven mindset to assigned tasks under the acknowledgement that the mountain works as a team toward achieving success.
- Able to work evenings and weekends (as needed) depending on event schedules.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 1 year of firsthand event execution experience
- Intermediate to expert skier or snowboarder, comfortable on double black diamonds
- Understanding of alpine ski racing and freeride ski & snowboard events, course planning, event announcing, and course set ups and race timing functions a plus
- Solutions-oriented
- Comfort carrying sometimes unwieldy objects while on foot or on skis/snowboard
- Prior successful performance as part of a team and under a direct report
- Have up-beat and “can-do” attitude
- Thrives in fast-paced environment
- Strong communication and correspondence skills with various personality types
- Ability to work well under pressure
TIME EXPECTATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Must work minimum of 48 hours to obtain and keep employee season pass
- Additional hours above 48 hours will be paid on a bi-weekly schedule
- Events take place Thursday – Sunday, most hours needed will be Saturday and Sunday
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to use manual dexterity to handle, feel, and operate vehicles, tools, and controls and reach with hands and arms. This individual is frequently required to stand, talk, and hear. Specific vision abilities of this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to type, file, and lift objects often up to 50 pounds. The employee must be physically able to tolerate winter conditions, cold temperatures, summer conditions, wet conditions, and warm temperatures.
RESPONSIBILITIES TO SAFETY:
- Protect the safety of self, co-workers, and Grand Targhee Resort guests always.
- Report any potentially harmful equipment or situations to the immediate supervisor without delay.
- Report safety-related accidents and incidents at once to immediate supervisor.
- Follow all company and department safety policies and procedures as outlined in the Resort’s Occupational Safety & Health Compliance Manual and department-specific procedures or manuals.
- Operate equipment in a safe manner that will not lead to injury of yourself or others.
- Drive in accordance with the law and Grand Targhee Resort policies.
