Retail Sales Associate

Our sales associates work as a team to greet our customers and keep the store looking sharp! Duties include welcoming shoppers to our stores, assisting customers with product info, recommendations, and helping them find the perfect keepsake. Expect a fast-paced atmosphere as we fold garments, restock inventory, and maintain our merchandising displays. Be prepared to get your 10,000 steps each day, and be able to do some light lifting if necessary. This is a great place to start if you're looking to get some customer service experience!

Responsibilities Include:

Maintaining a safe, clean, fun, and orderly store environment
Welcoming customers to our stores
Assisting shoppers with product info, recommendations, availability, etc.
Promoting and selling products
Folding garments and restocking inventory

Retail Supervisor

Our retail supervisors are the heart of the sales floor, maintaining a constantly changing environment of customers and merchandise, all while helping manage our rotation of sales associates. All duties of our sales associates apply, along with the added responsibilities of opening and closing operations, cash handling and deposits, and maintaining our daily floor schedule of the sales associates rotation throughout the store. Some management and/or leadership experience is helpful as you will be asked to manage the sales floor in the absence of one of our managers. This is a great opportunity to expand your leadership experience and lead a great team!

Responsibilities Include:

All duties and responsibilities of our Sales Associate position
Assist customers with product and company information, promotions, and policies regarding returns and exchanges, as well as sale items
Process store transactions on the POS system, and be able to handle difficult transactions and situations as they arise
Model exceptional customer service
Perform opening and closing duties including cash handling, deposits, and daily sales reports
In the absence of a manager, provide shift supervision and leadership to associates
Help process web orders and maintain daily updating of web site inventory

Skills Required:

Excellent leadership and interpersonal skill with the ability to communicate confidently
Excellent sales skills with the ability to provide quality customer service
Friendly, upbeat demeanor, with a can-do attitude
Ability to accurately handle opening/closing accounting procedures and complex POS transactions
Ability to supervise and lead sales associates on duty
Previous POS experience helpful, basic computer skills are key

Warehouse Associate

Prefer a "back of house" retail opportunity? Like to dig into a task and see it through to the end? Have a great eye for detail and like to see things organized and tidy? Our warehouse associates position is ideal for people wanting to stay focused and very, very busy throughout the day. Every day we receive dozens of boxes of merchandise that need processing. From receiving against a purchase order, tagging items with price and size tags, and folding garments for storage in our warehouse, there is never a down moment for our warehouse associates. This position is more physically demanding than our retail store positions, requiring lots of lifting, along with carrying many boxes up flights of stairs. Get paid to work out, no gym membership necessary!

Responsibilities Include:

Maintain a safe, clean, and functional warehouse and work space
Process merchandise for the sales floor and warehouse storage, including folding, tagging, etc.
Verify shipments by matching product to packing slips and purchase orders
Document discrepancies in shipments and warehouse stock
Initiate transfers of product between stores
Pull and restock the sales floor throughout the day
Assist with conducting rolling inventories and other product maintenance duties
Maintain proper floor stock by conducting spot inventories on popular items

Skills Required:

Good written and verbal communication
Able to work efficiently with a high degree of accuracy
Excellent attention to detail; able to differentiate between colors, sizes, and garment styles
Able to read and comprehend computer-generated packing slips and inventory reports
Able to accurately match packing slips with merchandise and document discrepancies
Problem solve, ask questions, resolve issues as needed
Basic computer and data entry abilities
Ability to repeatedly lift 40 pound boxes, and carry them up flights of stairs

Cool As A Moose® is the cool place to shop in Maine for apparel, gifts, souvenirs, and sunglasses. Since 1986, we’ve treated our customers to the very best service and merchandise in a friendly, fun, and professional atmosphere. With 3 shops on Main St. in Bar Harbor surrounded by Acadia National Park, we've got something for everyone.

Our season runs from the beginning of May to the end of October. We hire a fun mix of local high schoolers and adults, young adults in college, and foreign workers from all over the world. Our group is eclectic and changes every year, but we always know how to laugh and have a good time while working hard.

Our positions don't require previous customer service experience, but you should be outgoing and willing to help the thousands of visitors who visit our locations every day. Teamwork is key as things can get a little crazy in July and August. But with group hikes, outings, and meals we build great relationships that make it a fun and exciting season year after year.

Customer service is what we sell, not t-shirts and other souvenirs. Be respectful and honest, and you will be respected and a trusted part of the team.

Our day starts around 9 am with a quick, thorough cleaning of each store. We open the doors around 9:30 am and the fun begins. There are lots of projects to do during the day, including folding and tagging clothing, merchandising new products, inventory maintenance, and helping customers with purchases. Our stores close around 10 pm, offering opportunities for flexible hours and shifts. You can expect your work days to be busy and fast-paced, but fun!

Employees are encouraged to get outside and enjoy everything Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island, and Acadia National Park have to offer.

Our stores are busy and fast-paced, so our people must be able to multitask and see a job through to completion. Customer service is key, but so is a big smile and willingness to learn and have fun! Housing overview

Cool As A Moose does offer limited housing in Bar Harbor.

For the 2024 season, we will be offering housing to candidates who can commit to staying through the end of October. Our housing is limited, so we need to be sure we get enough help to keep things going strong until the end of the season.

Our duplex is located on a quiet street in Bar Harbor, just a 5-minute walk from our stores and everything this quaint town has to offer. Each unit will house 4-6 employees, each sharing a bedroom with one other person. There are 2 full baths and a fully equipped kitchen in each unit as well, along with a shared common area. Weekly rent is $150 per person, which includes all utilities along with free WIFI and laundry facilities. A potentially refundable deposit of $150 is required prior to your move-in date. Limited parking is available for cars and trucks only, no campers.

All housing is supervised, and housing residents are required to sign a housing agreement including the length of stay and agreeing to all housing rules. Violation of these rules may result in the loss of housing. You must be at least 18 years of age to live in our housing.

Getting Here and Getting Around

If you're not bringing a car, there are several options to get to Bar Harbor. Boston is the closest metropolitan airport. From there you can take a Concord Coach Lines bus to Bangor. From Bangor, you can take the Bar Harbor Shuttle to get to Mount Desert Island, and Bar Harbor. We may be able to pick you up in Bangor as we have employees who drive there on occasion, but that would need to be arranged well in advance of your arrival.

Getting around MDI is a breeze with the free Island Explorer bus system that covers the whole island, and runs from late May to early October. All of Bar Harbor, and much of Acadia, are accessible by walking from our housing. Biking is also an option, but please know there is no convenient bike parking close to our stores.

For Fun

Mount Desert Island is home to Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor is the gateway town to the park, offering access by bus, bike, or even walking. Hundreds of miles of hiking, biking, and walking trails can take you to mountain peaks with ocean vistas as far as the eye can see. Cadillac Mountain, the tallest peak on the Eastern Seaboard at 1530 feet, offers adventurous hikers a glimpse of the first rays of the sun to hit the US at certain times of the year. Other outdoor opportunities include swimming, kayaking, sailing, fishing, canoeing, paddle boarding, rock climbing, and beautiful star gazing.

There are also cultural opportunities including 2 movie theaters, several museums, along with small concerts and theatrical performances, and even ghost tours! Nightlife is more subdued than in many big cities, but there are several bars and breweries in town. The 4th of July celebration in Bar Harbor is legendary, with day-long events including a parade, concerts, food vendors, and of course, a HUGE fireworks display to end the night.
