Job Description
As a Hiking Counselor, you'll craft captivating hiking expeditions through Rocky Mountain National Park and Indian Peaks Wilderness. Guide campers through nature's wonders, teaching outdoor skills, Leave No Trace principles, and fostering an abiding love for the natural world. CPR/WFA certification is required. Must be 20 years old by the start of Staff Training and have a valid US driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Essential Job Functions:
- Plan hiking trips for groups of thirteen campers and two counselors in Rocky Mountain National Park and/or Indian Peaks Wilderness.
- Assist campers with earning their hiking patch.
- Teach Leave No Trace ethics, orienteering, introductory geology (flora, fauna), and backcountry skills.
- Drive campers in a 15-passenger van to and from trailheads.
Room and Board
Enjoy provided accommodation and delicious meals amidst the breathtaking beauty of Estes Park. Housing arrangements vary based on position and include cozy cabins and shared living spaces, fostering a sense of camaraderie among staff.
Season & Dates
Our summer camp spans multiple programs, welcoming over 1,200 campers annually. Your commitment will be essential from May 28th to August 11th, with opportunities through October, guiding campers through a transformative journey amidst the Rockies.
Preferred Skills: Because of the level of hiking at Cheley Colorado Camps, applicants should possess hiking experience, outdoor passion, and knowledge of Rocky Mountain National Park and Indian Peaks Wilderness. We provide hiking counselors with extensive training so our counselors can provide our campers with a beautiful and memorable experience.
Required Skills for 20-year-olds: Extensive mountain backcountry experience (Rocky Mountain National Park preferred). This might include Cheley campers who received a hiking or backpacking patch at camp, completion of a NOLS course, Outward Bound or HMI experience, etc.
Physical Requirements: Must have visual and auditory ability to assess any unsafe environment or hazard and physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must have the physical ability and strength to carry a heavy pack over varied terrain (snow, tundra, boulders, loose rock, etc.) five days per week.
