At Camp IHC our goal is to have the best summer ever, each and every summer! We want staff to bring their creativity and passion for their speciality to share with our campers. 

We are looking for staff members that have fired a kiln; spun clay, and want to pass that passion on to over 700 campers at IHC this summer.

Job Description

Job Title: Activity Specialist: Creative and Performing Arts

Reports to: Directors, Asst. Director, Leadership Team, Group Leader

Position Purpose:

To further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of Arts & Crafts activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities.  Assist in the management of the Arts & Crafts Supplies as well as maining the appearance of the Gallery.

Essential Job Functions:

Develop and deliver a designated arts and craft(s) program(s) that is appropriate for the age and ability of campers

  • Create lesson plans and activities that match the campers’ abilities.
  • Evaluate the abilities of campers.
  • Design and deliver arts and crafts activities that make use of different art mediums, make use of the camp’s natural environment, and use the art resources most efficiently.
  • Evaluate the success of the arts and crafts program.

Encourage the growth and development of campers 

  • Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit.
  • Be encouraging and positive. 
  • Encourage participation of all campers in activities.

Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.

  • Be alert and attentive at all times.  
  • Model safe and appropriate behavior.  

Manage and care for physical facilities and equipment in the arts and crafts program area.

  • Maintain the necessary equipment -including, but not limited to, pencils, brushes, paint, paper, marker pens, clay, kiln, wheels. 
  • Ensure the security of the necessary arts and crafts equipment when not in use. 
  • Ensure the upkeep of the necessary arts and crafts equipment. 
  • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Clean arts and crafts equipment on a designated schedule. 

 Other Job Duties:

  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Assist in the planning of any special events.
  • Live in bunks with campers and other staff members.
  • Eat meals with your campers
  • Share communal bunk responsibilities with fellow bunk staff.

Equipment Used:

  • including, but not limited to, pencils, brushes, paint, paper, marker pens, clay, kiln, woodworking tools, etc.

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Documented experience in Arts & Crafts instruction or documented training and experience in a variety of arts activities the camp offers.
  • More than 2  year previous coaching experience or childcare experience.
  • High school diploma or GED.  
  • Current certification in first aid.

Physical Aspects of the Position:

  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques.

Physical Requirements:

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to lift, twist, bend, kneel, and squat repeatedly.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and run for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours/day.  
  • Ability to manipulate, use, and demonstrate sport-specific equipment and demonstrate sport-specific activities.  
  • Ability to work irregular hours.
