Backwater Trading Co. is looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our retail sales team! We are an active lifestyle clothing and accessory store, located on the island of Martha's Vineyard.

Martha’s Vineyard is one of the most beautiful places that you will have the opportunity to live in. The island is located in Massachusetts just south of Cape Cod. A longtime New England summer colony, it encompasses harbor towns and lighthouses, sandy beaches and farmland. It's accessible only by boat or air.

Your average day includes greeting customers, helping identify their needs and offering solutions, making sure our store merchandising looks impressive, items are constantly re-stoked and sized, checking out customers at the registers, and keeping the store clean (yes, bathrooms and windows too). You'll give lots of directions and answer many questions about Edgartown. No day is the same, but every day is fun and exciting!

This opportunity is perfect for those who love working in retail, are excited to learn about the clothing brands we carry (Patagonia, YETI, etc.) and are open to a ‘longer work season’. This will provide you much more stability compared to other seasonal jobs while enjoying the beautiful surroundings the New England harbors have to offer. You will add experience to your retail career and depending on your performance, we’d like to offer you the opportunity to return for future seasons!

We hire people who are excited about our location, are familiar with working long hours, want to meet new people and make lifelong friendships. You should be able to lift up to 50 pounds, stand for up to 10 hours per day and go up and down stairs carrying merchandise and boxes multiple times per day. You will live and work with other staff members so having good communication skills, a positive attitude and a willingness to work together are a must! You must interact and greet all of our customers. Having a strong work ethic is a must for this position. 

 We provide affordable housing for this position. A single room or shared room in a shared apartment is a 2 minute walk to the store, right in the middle of beautiful Edgartown. There are coin-operated washing and drying machines available for use. All cooking supplies are available for use.  Please notice that all utilities are included with the rent fee, apart from wifi.  There is no smoking, vaping or drugs allowed in the apartment. Everyone must be respectful of shared spaces and each other. You are required to clean up after yourself. Rent is $800 a month.

A $1.00 bonus per hour worked will be paid to those with perfect attendance at the end of the season (you must wort until the last day of your contract). You are expected to work rotating shifts, and work the shifts that have been assigned to you, no exceptions. The schedule is posted Saturday night and the week starts next day. You must be willing to work 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm, or any other shift assigned 5 days a week, 2 days off. You must work all holidays. No specific schedules or days off can be accommodated during our summer season May 1st- Sept 30th.
