The Corman Harriman Outdoor Center is an ideal destination for anyone looking for hiking, paddling, and camping opportunities in the heart of Harriman State Park at Breakneck Pond. Harriman State Park, New York’s second largest park, is located 30 miles from Manhattan and accessible by public transportation.
The role of Shift Leader is to provide managerial support and works closely with the Camp Manager and Assistant Manager. The Shift Leader will perform the duties alongside the Lodge crew, plus additional responsibilities including but not limited to opening or closing the office, overnight emergency contact, delegating tasks, monitoring daily operations, and signing off on assignments. Shift Leaders resolve problems with customers, assist crew troubleshooting any complications and report back to management. In the absence of Camp Manager and Camp Assistant Manager, the Shift Leader is responsible for overseeing daily operations, maintaining hospitality and organizational standards and procedures.The full-time seasonal position is based at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s (AMC) Corman Harriman Outdoor Center (CHOC) in Haverstraw, NY.
What you will be doing at AMC
- Act as supervisor of staff overseeing operations and delegating tasks in absence of Camp Manager & Camp Assistant Manager.
- Assist guests and visitors providing positive conflict resolution on shift.
- Participate in the daily cleanup and upkeep of guest cabins, communal areas, and bathrooms.
- Assist in upkeep of grounds and backcountry platform areas.
- Interact with guests regarding local information, camp amenities.
- Conduct cabin inspections to ensure cleanliness, in absence or in tandem with Camp Managers.
- Assist Kitchen with meal service, meal prep and any other setup/cleaning service as needed.
- Prepare meeting spaces for special events and programs including tables, chairs, equipment as needed.
- Conduct retail sales and inventory management.
- Waterfront and boating program duties including canoe/kayak/SUP care and maintenance.
Qualifications
What AMC is looking for
- Must be 18 years of age.
- College degree is preferred; equivalent outdoor education, program and facility management training and experience may be substituted for college degree.
- Exceptional communication skills both internally and externally with a commitment to the mission of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
- Prior supervisory experience in camp operations, hospitality and/or work in the outdoors preferred.
- Ability to work a varied schedule. Weekends are required and may include occasional overnight (MOD) Manager on Duty/emergency contact.
- Ability to work as part of a team yet self-motivated; ability to work effectively and maintain AMC standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office as well as general knowledge of workplace technology such as registers, and internet web applications.
- Ability to perform general maintenance tasks.
- Must be detail oriented, highly organized, highly flexible, adaptable, and resourceful.
- First Aid/CPR certified preferred.
- General understanding of relevant health and safety regulations and procedures.
- Must have an acceptable driving record to operate AMC vehicles.
- Physical abilities needed: Ability to operate standard office computers and machines, plus maintenance equipment. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds at the Lodge and in the backcountry. Ability to travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions.

Salary range: $15.25 / hour

External candidates typically begin their journey with us at the starting point of the salary range. The final compensation offer will be based on factors such as experience, education, skills and geographic differential relevant to the position, and will be discussed during the interview process.
