    Hospitality

    Adirondak Loj Crew/Hungry Hiker Staff

    $15.00 / hour + tips
    Heart Lake Program Center

    The Adirondak Loj Crew is responsible for housekeeping at the Adirondak Loj, Wilderness Campground, and Heart Lake Cabins, and serving guests meals at the Loj. Other duties include campground facility cleaning, assistance with food preparation, information services, and guest relations. As a part of this, Loj Crew staff play a key role in sharing the Adirondack Mountain Club’s mission with guests as well as opportunities to get involved as a member, donor, and volunteer.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Dining Service – 55%

    • Set up the dining area for the service of all meals
    • Serve meals and beverages to guests
    • Make morning & evening announcements to guests
    • Wash and return plates, dishes, & eating utensils to storage areas
    • Assure cleanliness of dining and kitchen areas
    • Assist in the preparation of food as necessary

    Cleaning – 45%

    • Assure cleanliness and daily upkeep of all guest & staff areas
    • Change bed sheets and make beds
    • Clean bathrooms and restock toiletries
    • Launder & fold towels and sheets, restock linen closet
    • Clean wash houses and restock toiletries
    • Clean cabins – bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas.
    • Provide general information and encourage a friendly, welcoming atmosphere at the Heart Lake property

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Basic:

    • A passion for outdoor education and a commitment to the mission, values, and vision of the Adirondack Mountain Club
    • Self-driven and comfortable working both independently and with a team
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to manage projects
    • Be comfortable in a teamwork environment and with shared, coed living quarters.
    • Enjoys living in the mountains and recreating in the outdoors.

    Preferred:

    • Previous experience working in hospitality & customer service.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, motivated, enthusiastic, and pays attention to details.

    Classification: Full-time, Seasonal, Non-exempt 

    Dates: Mid-May to Labor Day; option to stay through Indigenous Peoples’ Day 

    Salary/Wage: $15.00/hour

    Hospitality

    Adirondak Loj Front Desk Staff

    $15.00 / hour
    Heart Lake Program Center

    Adirondak Loj Front Desk Staff are responsible for creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests, managing reservations and transactions, and communicating with numerous departments. Ensuring that Adirondack Mountain Club’s guests are well-informed about their stay is central to the Front Desk Staff’s daily work. This also includes connecting guests with other staff who can answer questions about trail conditions, education programs, and other functions key to the Adirondack Mountain Club’s operations. In addition to supporting guests, Front Desk Staff also share the Adirondack Mountain Club’s mission and opportunities to get involved as a member, donor, and volunteer.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Guest Services – 70%

    • Encourage a friendly, welcoming atmosphere at the Adirondak Loj.
    • Answer and direct incoming calls.
    • Inform guests of Loj rates and services.
    • Make and confirm reservations for guests.
    • Check in and check out guests.
    • Confirm relevant guest information.
    • Verify credit cards for authorization.
    • Direct guests to their rooms.
    • Compute all guest billings, accurately post charges to guest rooms and house accounts.
    • Listen and respond to guest queries and requests both in-person and by phone.
    • Review accounts and charges with guests during the check-out process.
    • Process accurate payment of guest accounts.
    • Ensure smooth and efficient operation of the front desk, with particular attention to detail and minimum error.
    • Promote ADK membership as part of a larger effort to support the goals and objectives of the Adirondack Mountain Club.
    • Take care to assure safe and accurate cash storage and transactions.
    • Maintain a neat and orderly front desk and reception area

    Communication – 30%

    • Communicate with necessary staff including Loj Crew and maintenance to address any problems or complaints made by guests.
    • Coordinate with the Chefs and Loj Crew regarding daily meal counts and special meal events.
    • Coordinate with the Education staff regarding program reservations.
    • Coordinate with the Trails coordinator regarding Volunteer trails program registrations.
    • Communicate with staff at Johns Brook Lodge to ensure accurate reservations for the JBL facility
    • Provide accurate information about local attractions and services
    • Provide reliable, objective backcountry and miscellaneous information to the public or direct them to other sources.
    • Respond to emails.
    • Monitor visitors to the hotel.
    • Share rules and policies of the hotel.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Basic:

    • Ability to thrive in a busy and stressful work environment.
    • Detail oriented person.
    • Physical ability to go up and down stairs
    • Clear speaking voice.
    • Understanding of and interest in the mission and goals of the Adirondack Mountain Club.
    • Clear and legible handwriting.

    Preferred:

    • Experience in lodge/bed and breakfast field and customer service with an emphasis on telephone skills.

    BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION

    Reports to: Hospitality Director, Front Desk Supervisor 

    Supervises: N/A 

    Classification: Full-time, Seasonal, Non-exempt 

    Dates: Starting September 2023

    Salary/Wage: $15.00/hour

    Hospitality

    Johns Brook Lodge Hut Crew

    $15.00 / hour + tips
    Johns Brook Property

    The Johns Brook Lodge Hut Crew is responsible for performing the daily operations of the lodge during the summer full-service season, including meal service, cleaning, supplies pack-ins, and information services. Meal service includes prepping, cooking, and serving meals to guests. There are also two cabins and three lean-tos on property that staff clean between guest reservations. The Hut Crew is also responsible for seeing that guests are provided with accurate, objective trail information, and with communicating information about reservations to the front desk at Adirondak Loj. 

     

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

    Guest services – 80% 

    • Provide a welcoming atmosphere to guests and passers-by hikers 
    • Provide accurate trail information  
    • Assist guests with the check-in/check-out process 
    • Communicate with DEC on rescues, provide first aid when necessary 
    • Execute food service at lodge between June and August  
    • Transport food to Johns Brook Lodge and trash/recycling from Johns Brook Lodge weekly 

    Property Maintenance – 20% 

    • Handle daily maintenance and monitoring of propane and water systems 
    • Execute daily cleaning operations in the lodge, cabins and lean-tos 
    • Manage vault privy system, change barrels as needed 
    • Complete rotating weekly cleaning chores inside the lodge 

     

    QUALIFICATIONS 

    Basic: 

    • A passion for outdoor education and a commitment to the mission, values, and vision of the Adirondack Mountain Club 
    • Self-driven and comfortable working both independently and with a team 
    • Valid driver’s license and reliable, transportation for work-related travel  
    • Experience with basic cooking and baking 
    • Ability to work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather 
    • Ability to navigate 3.5 miles by foot over rough terrain with heavy pack loads 

    Preferred: 

    • Some experience in a food service setting 
    • Some experience in a hospitality setting

    Hospitality

    The Hungry Hiker Cook

    $15.00 / hour + tips
    Heart Lake Program Center

    The Hungry Hiker Cook is a leadership position in food service at the Adirondack Mountain Club’s seasonal food stand. The Hungry Hiker Cook oversees daily set up, cooking, and maintenance at The Hungry Hiker throughout the summer season. This includes serving, at times, hundreds of visitors a day, which requires flexibility in a fast-paced environment. During slower times, The Hungry Hiker Cook shares the Adirondack Mountain Club’s mission with guests as well as opportunities to get involved as a member, donor, and volunteer. 

     

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

    Food Preparation and Cooking – 75% 

    • Daily set up and professional presentation of the food stand and menu items 
    • Cooking/grilling of standard menu items 
    • Preparation of food and assistance with creating menu items and specials 
    • Maintain a high level of cleanliness in all food service areas, ensuring a clean stand and food preparation that meets health code standards 
    • Work and communicate with the Loj Chefs with food orders and weekly and monthly inventory 
    • Assume a leadership role at the food stand during hours at work 

    Guest Services – 15% 

    • Encourage a friendly, welcoming atmosphere 
    • Taking orders accurately, collecting money and tendering change 
    • Promote ADK membership as part of a larger effort to support the goals and objectives of the Adirondack Mountain Club 
    • Provide general information and encourage a friendly, welcoming atmosphere at the Heart Lake property 

    Maintenance – 10% 

    • Take care to assure safe and accurate cash storage and transactions 
    • Assure cleanliness and daily upkeep of the surrounding grounds 
    • Assure cleanliness and daily upkeep of the adjacent wash house and restock toiletries 
    • Supplemental duties/responsibilities to support other Club operations/functions as requested 

     

    QUALIFICATIONS 

    Basic: 

    • A passion for outdoor education and a commitment to the mission, values, and vision of the Adirondack Mountain Club 
    • Familiar with Department of Health standards 
    • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time and lift weights in excess of 50 pounds 
    • Be comfortable in a teamwork environment and with shared, coed living quarters 
    • Enjoys living in the mountains and recreating in the outdoors 

    Preferred: 

    • Previous cooking experience in a fast-paced environment and food service establishment 
    • Excellent customer service skills, communication, interpersonal skills, motivated, enthusiastic, and pays attention to details

    Hospitality

    Adirondak Loj Cook

    $18.00 / hour
    Heart Lake Program Center

    The Loj Cook is responsible for food preparation at the Adirondak Loj. This includes direct oversight of the daily food service and wait staff operations at the Heart Lake Program Center. During shifts the cook assumes full responsibility for the operation and service of the kitchen and dining room.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Food Service - 70%

    • Help develop and work within planned menus to prepare food in accordance with a wholesome, nutritious diet, with concern paid to allergies and other dietary restrictions.
    • Lead or assist in preparation and service of breakfast, trail lunches, and dinner.
    • Maintain a high level of cleanliness in all food service areas, ensuring a clean kitchen and food preparation that meets health code standards.
    • Maintain current ServSafe Food Handler and Allergens Certifications.
    • Support coworkers to ensure smooth and efficient kitchen operations and assist in routine Program Center operations when necessary.
    • Assume a leadership role in the kitchen during hours at work.
    • Handle incoming orders to ensure that orders correspond with invoices and are stored correctly. Check for quality and accuracy.
    • Provide assistance and support to any position in the kitchen.

    Leadership - 30%

    • Maintain high standards and promote a positive, customer service-oriented attitude among all staff through leading by example, coaching, and positive reinforcement.
    • Oversee Loj Crew staff regarding customer service, quality of work, hospitality, use of time, and appearance while engaged in food service activities.
    • Coordinate with the Kitchen Supervisor to provide and enhance food related services.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Basic:

    • Food service experience, preferably in a supervisory capacity
    • Willingness to work flexible hours, weekends, holidays, and in normal kitchen conditions
    • Physical ability to go up and down stairs
    • Physical ability to lift and carry heavy loads, sometimes exceeding 50 pounds.
    • A passion for and commitment to the mission, values, and vision of the Adirondack Mountain Club

    Preferred:

    • Experience in menu planning and food ordering
    • Reliability to handle night responsibilities and unknown situations.
